Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach Jon Gruden Out Amid E-Mail Controversy

Jon Gruden has officially resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, this after alleged racist, misogynistic and homophobic e-mails from Gruden were leaked to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.

According to reports, the troubling e-mails spanned seven years, going as far back as 10 years ago. Comments in his e-mails included a racist comment about NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith (referring to his “lips the size of michellin tires,” vulgar criticism of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, “queer” references to former defensive end Michael Sam, and harsh language for a handful of team owners involved in the 2011 labor disagreement that led to the lockout.

“I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction,” Gruden said in a statement Monday night. “Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

Ironically, the emails came to light during the NFL’s investigation into workplace misconduct with the Washington Football Team, as “the league was informed of the existence of emails that raised issues beyond the scope of that investigation,” according to NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy.

Raiders owner Mark Davis released a short statement saying he has accepted Gruden’s resignation. Assistant coach Rich Bisaccia will serve as interim head coach effective immediately, the team announced. Bisaccia will meet with the media during availability on Wednesday.

The 58-year old Gruden became the Raiders head coach in 2018, agreeing to a 10-year contract worth a reported $100 million. He leaves the Raiders just four years into his contract, and while he likely won’t have a job in the NFL anymore, he isn’t going to go broke, having earned nearly $40 million in his time in Las Vegas.
