Raiders Cut Richardson

Bye Bye Trent Richardson.  According to, the Oakland Raiders released Richardson on Monday as part of the team’s first wave of cuts.  Like all NFL teams, Oakland has until 4:00pm today (Tues) to trip down to 75 players.  You can place the release of Richardson along with the Buffalo release of RB Fred Jackson as the first of the “notable” cuts that we will hear more of today and in the next weeks as teams get down to their 53 man roster for the season.

Obviously the Raiders were not on the bubble about keeping Richardson.  With a backfield jammed up with Latavius Murry, Taiwan Jones, Roy Helu and Marcel Reece,  Oakland had much better options than keeping Richardson.  Now looking for his 4th team in as many years, it may be the end of the road for the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.  He got off to a bad start in Oakland, showing up to training camp slightly overweight, then failing to impress coaches rushing for only 42 yards on 15 carries in three pre-season games.   Oakland Head Coach Jack Del Rio said on Aug 26th that “We’ve got to see some of the explosiveness that he had when he was a young man playing for the Crimson Tide there.”   The only explosiveness anyone saw out of Richardson was to his wallet, as he walks away from the Raiders with $600,00 in guaranteed money that Oakland gave him when he signed a 2 year deal back in March.

After being drafted as the overall 3rd pick in 2012 by the Cleveland Browns, Richardson was dealt away to Indy barely on month into the 2013 season to Indy for a 2014 Firs Round Draft pick.   In Indianapolis, Richardson did not impress.  On his first carry in an NFL play off game against the Chiefs, he fumbled his first carry, leading to a KC touchdown.  The Colt’s cut him in March of this year and he was picked up by Oakland a few days later.

If there is a team looking to sign Richardson, they may have a hard time locating any film of him other than his Alabama plays that would include any “highlights” of his capabilities.  It looks like this my be the end of Trent Richardson’s NFL playing days..

Wishing Trent the best, moving on. There is no need to hate on him. He has lost a step and his lack of field vision cost him. We took a $600,000 gamble on him. He tried. Fair is fair. Helu looked good and Taiwan can be a factor in Musgrave’s offense. Latavius is looking like the real deal. We are blessed. Turn the page.
