According the BleacherReport, Jack DelRio has already accepted the head coaching position with the Oakland Raiders. Although unconfirmed, all signs are leaning toward it being announced shortly before the end of the day. DelRio joins the Raiders after spending 2 brief years as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator. In a weird twist, the Hayward, CA native, was hired by Denver after Dennis Allen left the team following the 2011 season to become the Raiders’ head coach. Del Rio, when hired in Oakland, DelRio will be replacing Allen, who was fired earlier this season.
Del Rio brings more head coaching experience to the position than anyone since Norv Turner, having amassed a near-.500 record (68-71) and leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to a pair of playoff appearances during his nine seasons as their coach. Since leaving Jacksonville in 2011, Del Rio has served as defensive coordinator under recently fired Broncos head coach John Fox. The Broncos, of course, owned a .792 winning percentage over the previous three seasons, owning the league’s fourth-best defense in terms of points allowed during Del Rio’s first season as DC. Since then, though, Denver has ranked 22nd and 16th in scoring defense the past two seasons despite five Pro Bowl selections on that side of the ball this year. He also served as interim head coach of the Broncos when Fox required open-heart surgery and missed several months during the 2013 season.
Del Rio, who initially met with Mark Davis on Jan. 4, grew up in the area, and his family is longtime Raiders season-ticket holders.
The Raiders made a good decision in hiring Del Rio.
