Raiders Grab Speedy WR Henry Ruggs III with 12th Pick in the 2020 NFL Draft

The Raiders needed to get faster at the receiver spot, and on Thursday they did that with wide out Henry Ruggs III with the 12th pick in the draft.

Paul Gutierrez of ESPN talks about why the Raiders went this route in the first round with the 12th pick:

Speed. Pure, unadulterated speed. Because with all three of the consensus top three wideouts still on the board, the Raiders went with the fastest player at the scouting combine (a nod to the late team owner Al Davis, perhaps?) as Ruggs ran a 4.27-second 40-yard dash. Coach Jon Gruden realizes that to battle the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, he needs a similar team, a fast one. And in Ruggs, he has a complement to Kansas City’s Tyreek Hill. He hopes.

Raiders GM Mike Mayock talks about the drafting of the super quick wide out:

Henry Ruggs was a crucial pick for the Raiders. The Raiders lacked speed last season regarding their receivers. Ruggs is sure to help with that and add some spark to the offense. His stats alone prove his worth and potential value he can add to the Raiders. According to this one Scouting Report on Henry Ruggs I found, he had the fastest 40 yard dash at the 2020 NFL Combine (4.27s), hes only had 5 career drops on 139 total targets, and had 24 career TD receptions which ranks 3rd in Alabama history. These stats are crazy and shows just how special Ruggs is.
