Raiders Decline Fifth-Year Option on Safety Karl Joseph

The Raiders have decided to decline the fifth-year option for 2020 on safety Karl Joseph according to the team’s official website.

The decision is somewhat of a surprise after head coach Jon Gruden suggested in February that the team would pick up the option. The No.14-overall pick in the 2016 draft out of West Virginia, Joseph seemed out of favor with Gruden’s hand-picked coaching staff to begin the 2018 season and was labeled a draft bust. As the season went on, however, he turned into a quality starter.

The Raiders apparently are still not believers after signing former Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner in free agency and using one of their three first-rounders on S Johnathan Abram last week. If the 25-year-old Joseph continues his improvement from 2018, he will likely be a hot commodity on the free agent market next spring.
