Raiders Sign Free Agent DE Dave Tollefson

The Raiders agreed to a contract with veteran defense end Dave Tollefson on Friday evening according to  Andrew Brandt of ESPN and the National Football Post, Tollefson will sign a two-year deal worth $2.5 million. The person familiar with the negotiations said the contract could be worth up to $3 million.

Tollefson, 29, spent the past five seasons with the New York Giants, where he played a part in their winning two Super Bowl titles. Tollefson was a hybrid defensive lineman for the Giants and rotated from defensive end to tackle.

Over the past four years with the New York Giants, the 6-4, 266-pound Northern California native has appeared in 57 games (just two starts) and amassed 77 total tackles, 10.0 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Tollefson proved to be an overlooked and versatile piece of the team’s pie along its ferocious defensive line.  He collected 21 tackles, one forced fumble and 5.0 sacks during the Giants’ Super Bowl run in 2011.

A former member of the Raiders’ practice squad, Tollefson , the past two weeks also met with the Green Bay Packers (where he spent his rookie year in ’06) and the Packers remain potential suitors.  He’s also visited Nashville on Thursday for a meeting with the Tennessee Titans.  Nevertheless, all along he was confident that everything would work out with Oakland.

Signing with the Silver and Black, he will presumably become the third defensive end on the team behind Lamar Houston and Matt Shaughnassy, as well as a solid player on special teams. Tollefson will make up for the loss of veteran defensive linemen Jarvis Moss and Trevor Scott. Moss currently remains a free agent. Scott signed earlier in free agency with the New England Patriots.

This is a solid addition to not just our Defensive Line but our Roster. Tollefson will be at worst a solid rotational player who can play many positions in the 3-4 and the 4-3 and at best he is a player who showed flashes of his real self last season and will break out for close to 10 sacks in 2012. Either way he is a solid rotational player to help keep our D-Line fresh and can’t be any worse in run support than whats already on the roster. I like the signing and if R.M can get Branch locked into a long term deal soon I will be very happy with the off-season.

I like this signing as well, but we can’t kid ourselves into believing that grabbing second-stringers from championship caliber teams will make us a championship caliber team.
