Raiders sign Philip Wheeler, acquire Mike Goodson

The Oakland Raiders woke again in the off-season and made two moves Friday. First they conduct their first trade under the new management. Oakland traded offensive lineman Bruce Campbell to the Carolina Panthers for running back Mike Goodsen. Later the same day signed former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Phillip Wheeler.

Trade did not come as surprise to Raider Nation as many may think.  Campbell is known as a workout warrior basically another one Al Davis legendary guys. Campbell was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Maryland. As an offensive tackle he struggled in the NFL and was moved to guard. Campbell was rarely on the active roster for the Raiders, he only played in a total of 14 games in two season with the team.

But Campbell may fit right in two the Panthers plan on the line. Since  he does have flexibility in that he can play both guard and tackle. For now I would anticipate he is going to be mostly used for an insurance policy for Jeff Otah and could be a replacement once his contract expires.

On the other hand the Raiders do get what they are looking for to fill-in the hole once Michael Bush signed with the Bears. Mike Goodsen 25 year-old had a lot of promise coming out of Texas A&M in fourth round but really never seemed to make a big splash with the Panthers. He had a few solid games in place on DeAngelo Williams and Jonathon Stewart in 2010 when he rushed for 100 yards a few times, but other than those few times in his career, he has been known to be fumble prone. Placing him on the bench last season.

Goodsen seemed out of the Panthers plans this coming season ever since. In Oakland he will compete for the number two back-up job with Taiwan Jones, behind starter Darren McFadden.

The trade really works out for both teams. The Raiders get rid of Campbell the gifted overcheiver, who never showed his complete talents in Oakland and the Panthers move out their extra ball carrier that struggled in their backfield.

Later the same day another headline shine for the Raiders. According to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, the  Raiders have signed free agent linebacker Philip Wheeler to a one-year deal.Wheeler was selected in third round of the 2008 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, out of Georgia Tech.

Last season with the Colts he had a career high in tackles in 11 starts with 84 and had one sack and forced a fumble. Wheeler would replace linebacker Kamerion Wimbley that left an empty space on the Raiders defense upon his departure, during the free agent frenzy he signed Tennessee Titans.

Last week the Raiders seemed to show some interest in Manny Lawson but he resigned with the Bengals earlier in the week. Wheeler is a talented young 27 year old 6-2 245 pound linebacker capable of filling the missing puzzle to the Raiders defense rather quickly.

Raiders now are able to fill-in the gap at linebacker with an exiting young pass rusher. Providing Raiders head coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver more powerful tools to work with on the defensive side of the ball.

  1. No big loss for the Raiders. Let’s hope they can continue to build on the success they have already had.
