Aaron Curry Says He’s Re-Done His Deal

Raiders linebacker Aaron Curry announced on Twitter on Friday night that he has restructured his contract.

Details were not yet known of the restructure, but Curry was scheduled to earn $5.7575 million in base salary in 2012, the final year of his previously renegotiated rookie contract.

The No. 4 pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, Curry signed a six-year, $48.06875 million contract that contained $34.01 million in guaranteed money. Curry started 28 of 30 games over his first two seasons in Seattle, totaling 134 tackles, 5.5 sacks and four forced fumbles, but agreed to a restructured contract that removed some contractual guarantees and shortened the deal by two seasons, scheduling him for unrestricted free agency in 2013.

Seattle traded Curry to the Raiders last October. In 11 games, including nine starts, Curry totaled 46 tackles and had three passes defensed. Curry appeared to play better without the pressure of being a Top 5 draft choice in Oakland, but $5.7575 million was a hefty price tag for the cap-strapped Raiders.

Between the Friday releases of defensive backs Hiram Eugene and Chris Johnson, and the restructured contracts of Carson Palmer, Richard Seymour, Michael Huff and now Aaron Curry, the Raiders have cleared more than $25 million in cap space this week. Additional space could be created with a restructure or release of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley’s contract.

Very happy he is staying with us. I think he was awesome last year, and he’s going to really show his worth this year. A true Raider!
