It was thought that the Raiders and senior executive John Herrera would continue their relationship, but now Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group reports the two have parted ways, and the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Herrera plans to retire. .
According to McDonald, Herrera’s departure was a decision made on the business side of the club, not by the football operations side that has added new general manager Reggie McKenzie and head coach Dennis Allen this off-season.
Herrera was very close with the late Al Davis, who had Herrera out of high school in the early 1960s to run errands. Though front office executives generally work behind the scenes, Herrera stepped into the spotlight a few years ago when he confronted San Jose Mercury News columnist Tim Kawakami in the Raiders’ media room, a scene that was captured by television cameras and posted on YouTube.
