If You Can’t Say Anything Nice…

Uh oh.

Let’s just say the Carson Palmer era didn’t quite get off on the best foot. And while we’re at it, the Kyle Boller era ended before it began.

The Kansas City Chiefs came into the Black Hole today and humiliated the new and “improved” Raiders, 28-0. Boller’s first pass of the day went for a touchdown. To Kansas City. He threw to Jacoby Ford, and instead found Kendrick Lewis. 59 yards later it was 7-0 Chiefs. It would never get any closer.

Boller isn’t as bad of a quarterback as he showed today. He just isn’t an NFL starting quarterback. His three interceptions however were atrocious. And after falling behind 14-0 at the half, his leash was pretty short entering the 3rd quarter. After three straight incompletions to start the 2nd half ( which was actually an improvement ), he got the hook.

Down 21-0, and without an injured Darren McFadden, Palmer was brought into the game. And he didn’t do that badly, if you compare him to Boller. If you compare him to anyone else, he was nauseatingly bad. Truly, it almost made me sick. Couple of nice throws. With some practice, and a healthy McFadden, he could be OK, but this was a disaster. 8-21 for 116 yards and three picks of his own, including a dreadful pick-6 by Brandon Flowers on a read that was as bad as anything by Nicholas Sparks. Although I cried more today than during Message in a Bottle.

It’s too early to jump on the “Raiders overpaid big time for Carson Palmer “ bandwagon. Maybe they did, we’ll see. Today was certainly not a good beginning, but it also wasn’t the end.

The Chargers lost in New York, so they lead the division, a half game up on the Raiders, who now have a week off before Denver comes to town. That should be a perfect time for the Raiders to get Palmer the work needed to get back into the swing of things.

If they lose that game, then it’s time to panic. Until then, as Kevin Bacon said in Animal House, “Remain calm. All is well.”

Or to put it another way, “ You’re all worthless and weak. Now drop and give me twenty!”
