Raiders Texans Preview – The Ghost of Shanahan Lives

So even Mike Shanahan’s disciples beat the Raiders regularly…

This is the 6th straight season the Raiders face the Texans and have gone 1-4 against them since 2006, when Gary Kubiak took over as the head coach.  How can the Raiders turn their fortunes around this Sunday?

Hit 20

23, 27, 22…these are the touches that Darren McFadden had in the first 3 games, which led to 2 victories and 3 point loss that never should have been.  Yet, against the Patriots, the Raiders only fed the ball to DMC 18 times.  They have to get him the ball, even if they are down a couple of scores.  He is your home run hitter, the guy who would force their safeties up to hit the deep ball.  Don’t be cute, get him the ball early and often.

Waiting for ‘Dre

Not talking about Detox, which I have been waiting way to long to get released.  Instead, it’s the Texans’ offense waiting for Andre Johnson, who is shelved for the next few weeks.  With no need to double any of the other wide receivers, the Raiders need to send pressure right into Matt Schaub’s face and single up the rest of the field.

Arian Nation

Probably one of the most talked about hammy’s in recent history (mostly because of fantasy football), Arian Foster came back from that injury in full force last week, rushing for 150 yards against a Steelers team that just doesn’t allow that.  Mr. Rolando McClain, you have been blasted all week about your inability to hit the hole and make plays.  Here is your chance for more than a cameo.

The New Tripletts

Louis Murphy, Jacoby Ford, and Denarius Moore will be on the field for the first time as a group in 2011.  This gives the Raiders the most weapons they have had in years (add in Kevin Boss, Chaz Shillens, DHB), and allows for opportunities for some creative game planning.  Do they become the 2011 version of the 80’s Washington Redskins wide receiver group?  This group needs to catch 10-12 passes between them for 125+ yards against the Texans to give them balance they need.

The road has not been kind to the Raiders, but this Sunday brings a great opportunity.  A team you’re familiar with, without their best player, and have been mind-numbingly inconsistent in their existence gives the Raiders a great shot to getting this win.  Can Hue Jackson get them to respond as such?
