NFL may end Raiders vs 49’ers preseason games

On Monday, San Francisco owner Jed York said he will recommend to the NFL that the annual preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders “at least be postponed for some period of time” following an outbreak of violence during and after last Saturdays game, which Oakland fell to the 49’ers 17 to 3.

The cross-bay rivals annual pre-season game was marred after two men were shot and wounded after the game — one critically — outside San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, while a man was beaten unconscious in a restroom during the game.     In a joint statement Sunday, San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan condemned the attacks, saying, “Violence will not be tolerated in either of our stadiums.”

Said York, “This is a game where you have a rivalry situation and, unfortunately, you have the worst segment from a very small segment of both fan bases that come and bring about this type of event,”  he added  “It’s our belief that we should recommend to the NFL that this game is at least postponed for some period of time.”

San Jose Mercury News, citing sources, said that the game could be removed permanently from the teams’ preseason schedules and partially replaced by a closed training camp scrimmage.  San Fran Police Chief  Greg Suhr said there were 70 ejections at the game, with 12 arrests.

On Monday hospital officials upgraded the condition of two of those hurt. A 24-year-old man wearing a “F— the 49ers” T-shirt who was shot four times in the stomach and the 26-year-old restroom beating victim were upgraded to fair condition, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.  The second shooting victim, 20, suffered only superficial wounds to his face, according to police.

Great.. Lets punish the real fans, the teams and the communities for the actions of 4 or 5 punks.. Why stop at the Oakland / SF game?  What about the Browns / Steelers?  What about the Jets / Patriots?   Those are some pretty nasty rivalries.. By cancelling these games, all the NFL is doing is admitting defeat to a bunch of spine-less thugs who cant seem to get it in their drug corroded brains that their alcohol induced violence is nothing but a way to show how idiotic one can be at a sporting event.. Guns at a football game?  Are you kidding me?  The NFL needs to get a grip and understand that rivalries are part of the game and it’s history.  Just because some wimps have to show what big fans they are by using violence doesn’t mean that the NFL should cancel ANY games.  Has anyone thought of maybe placing additional police / security at games like the Raiders vs 49’ers where they know there may be issues?  Seems like a better answer to the problem to me than just giving in and cancelling the games..

Love how a bunch of thugs ruin these games for everyone else. Tards

  2. Melanie says:

I agree, why cancel the game because of some people. On an average, most people behave themselves. How bout some metal detectors.
