When Al Likes You…

Stanford Routt is a good cornerback….as a #2.  I’d even say that any good man-to-man CB (removing DeAngelo Hall from the equation) would do good when Nnamdi Asomugha is on the other side.  So then, if I was the GM, I’d pay Routt good money, say 3 years @ $22 m with 2 years and $15m guaranteed.  I would not, though, give him 3 years $31.5m with 2 years $20m guaranteed.

But Al likes Routt.

Kamerion Wimbley is a good LB…but not a #1 middle linebacker type.  He excels off the edges, but struggles in the passing game.  2010 was his first good year in the NFL, and he has the potential to be even better.  So then, if I was the GM,  I’d give him a 3 year contract worth $21 m with 2 years and $13 m guaranteed.  I wouldn’t franchise him and pay him Top 5 LB money.

But Al like Wimbley.

I get the aspect that Al wants to keep the young core, especially when that core excelled this past year (Routt, Wimbley, McFadden, McClain, Houston, Veldheer, Ford).  It is the best way and found to be the successful way to keep your organization competitive in the long haul.

However, when an owner makes the money decision to keep or get someone, they always end out overpaying (look at Jerry Jones, Al Davis, Daniel Snyder).  When a good, strong GM is involved, a better job is done on understanding the true value of players and paying them accordingly.

Unless, of course, Al likes you…
