Overconfidence? Really?

Over confident. That’s what some of the players in the Raiders locker room were using as an excuse for their disturbing season opening loss against the Titans. No, really.

That’s as if Lithuania lost to Team USA this past weekend because they were looking past Kevin Durant and worried how they would stop Turkey’s Ersan Ilyasova.

C’mon? Over confident? This from a team that has lost an NFL record 11 or more games 7 straight years? Doesn’t over confident mean that you are starting out by just being ‘confident’? and from there you build, to the point where you might be too confident based on doing things well for an extended period of time.

Look, I still think despite the disastrous start in Nashville this season will be much better for the Raiders. First off, the fact that Jason Campbell is taking responsibility for that humiliating beginning is more than his predecessor ever did. JaMarcus Russell wasn’t just a bust because of his horrible play.

Lots of guys play horrible—Okay, not that horrible— but they don’t follow it up with this “I could care less” attitude. Maybe Russell’s persona was just one of indifference. But teammates can read that as not caring. Campbell cares. And that is a big difference in and of itself.

Secondly, is it possible that the Titans are really that good? I mean they started last year 0-6 with Raiders reject Kerry Collins throwing passes to DB’s instead of WR’s at an alarming rate. Then the owner said, “ Hey, let’s try Vince Young.” 8-2 the rest of the way. I think Young is a difference maker. Always has been. And Chris Johnson is unstoppable.

But the Raiders did stop him. 25 times for 66 yards. It was that 1 time for 76 yards that really skews things. But Raider fans and players talk like that 1 time doesn’t matter. Actually, it’s the 25 times that doesn’t matter. The Titans have a back that they keep giving the ball to, because they are waiting for him to hit the home run.

They know eventually if he gets enough pitches, he’s gonna leave the yard. For years the Raiders run defense has been abysmal, but with the addition of their top two picks, Inside Linebacker Rolando McClain and D-Tackle Lamarr Houston, that was supposedly improved. Not yet.

However, I think those kids are going to really help. Game one of an NFL season, let alone an NFL career isn’t enough to make a snap judgment on. Give these guys some time to develop, to see how things play out at this level. Then throw Michael Bush back into the mix, and maybe Heyward-Bay does something positive. Okay, okay, slow down, but you see where I’m going here.

I understand the reason for optimism, but before we start printing playoff tickets, how about winning a game. And then if we can win another, and then another and before you know it, the Raiders are on a winning streak. Raiders and winning streak haven’t been in the same sentence in a long, long time.

But be careful, because if you win too much. If you win consistently time and time again, one could get over confident really quick. And we all know what can happen to a team when that happens.
