Cable Continues Push to Want to Be Coach in 09
From: SF Chronicle
The “Cable for Coach” campaign swept through Florida, and what an Obama-like push Raiders candidate Tom Cable made to the regular season’s finish line. He kicked a team nemesis off the playoff ballot, won over players concerned with a slumping win percentage and energized the youth base of a down-and-out roster.
Now, all Raiders interim head coach Tom Cable can do is wait and see if Sunday’s 31-24 victory over Tampa Bay was enough to sway the only vote that matters on the silver-and-black map: the one belonging to team owner Al Davis. “It’s all I can do,” Cable said after finishing his 4-8 tryout with consecutive victories. “It’s the best I can do. I want to be the head coach of the Raiders but it’s not in my hands. “I certainly know I put this team together and got it going in the right direction, and today proved that.”
When the game was over, heir to the team Mark Davis was beaming outside the locker room, saying “Wow” over and over again. Longtime team official John Herrera, a Davis confidant, couldn’t slap enough backs. Here’s why: The Raiders haven’t finished the regular season with a victory since the 2002 Super Bowl run. They haven’t won a road finale since the 1999 season.
