57-Yard OT Field Goal Wins it for Raiders 16-13 Over Jets

Brett Favre had never lost to the Oakland Raiders when he was the QB of the Green Bay Packers. In his first outing vs the Raiders as a member of the New York Jets, Oakland used a super kick from Sebastian Janikowski in overtime to top Favre and the Jets 16-13 to move to 2-4 on the season.

The Raiders D did a nice job holding Favre and New York in check. While the Jets put up 418 total yards, Favre was just 21-for-38 for 197 yards with no touchdowns and two picks, a QB rating of 47.8. Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell actually outplayed Favre, as he threw for 203 yards in 17-for-30 passing with one TD and no picks.

One thing the Raiders could not do was stop Thomas Jones, who ran for 159 yards on 24 carries vs Oakland. He put up 6.6 yards per carry, but never found the end zone. The only Jets score came with 8 minutes left when Leon Washington went in from 11 yards out to tie the game at 10. The Raiders had went up 10-3 when Russell hit Javon Walker from 8 yards out with 9:35 left in the third quarter.

The Raiders almost were able to win in regulation, as Janikowski hit a 37-yard field goal with 2:56 left to make it 13-10. The Jets moved down the field, and Jay Feely at first missed a 52-yard field goal with 3 seconds left that would have clinched the win for the Raiders. But new coach Tom Cable called one of those overused time outs to “ice the kicker.” Then Feely came back and hit the field goal to tie the game.

Both teams had the ball three times in OT. The Jets never got further than their own 22 yard line, and in punted all three times. The Raiders game-winning drive started at their own 19, and they went six plays and 42 yards to set up Janikowski for the booming game winning kick. The loss drops the Jets to 3-3 on the season. Next week they are at home vs the awful Chiefs. The Raiders travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens.

  1. How did we win this game despite having called the worst possible plays for the situation for the last, like, six series.

…and am I the only one out there that sees how bad Justin Fargas is? I think half the times he just gets the ball and closes his eyes. If i have to watch him run into one of his own blockers again and fall down for a loss while we’ve got friggin’ Run DMC and Michael Bush on the sideline? C’mon!
