Raiders Add Another Piece on Defense Signing DE Spires
Posted by Matt Loede on May 13th, 2008 in News
The Raiders have added another piece to the defense, as today they came to terms on a 1-year deal with DE Greg Spires. The veteran will compete for downs as pass rusher on the right side of the Raiders line. Spires became a free agent after he was released by Tampa Bay in a salary cap move in February. He has 39.5 sacks in his 10-year career, playing the past six seasons with the Buccaneers. He played only 10 games last year because of a calf injury. His best season came in 2004, when he had eight sacks.

While I do not disagree with this signing, I am curious as to why the Raiders haven’t signed DT’s Rod Coleman and Grady Jackson. Granted that they are both up in age, but they are both solid in terms of their ability. DT is a bigger concern than DE is.
While I have heard that Oakland is talking to Grady Jackson, there still has been no news of a deal being reached. I liked how aggressive the Raiders were this offseason in signing players that could help the team. BUT I do have a problem with the amount of money they have signed away and to whom said money was given to. 50.5 Mil to Tommy Kelly? Are you serious? 55 Mil to Javon Walker? Even after 3 knee surgeries?
It is for these reasons why I am now going to school with the hopes of one day being a GM of an NFL franchise, preferably the Oakland Raiders of course. I have a desire to fix their money troubles as well as fixing the team. I bid you adieu for now, but until next time….
