Key Players Missing Practice; Could Sit Sunday

BurgessThe Raiders are already heavy underdogs going to San Diego this weekend, and now a few of their better defensive players may be out for this AFC West showdown.  D-lineman Derrick Burgess continues to miss practices with his lingering calf injury, and Gerard Warren is also hurting, as he hurt his thigh last week during practice, and may not be able to go Sunday either.  Warren has a team leading three sacks, and the team will need all the help they can get against Philip Rivers and the hot Chargers offense.

“It is what it is,” Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Thursday. “Guys will need to step up. We’re prepared to go without them. It looks like it’s going to go that way, so we’ll have guys step up just like we would for any of our positions.”

Burgess did not take part in the entire practice on Thursday, and if he can’t go it will be rookie Jay Richardson once again.  He started the last two games in that spot, and while it looked like earlier in the week Burgess would go, now it does not appear likely.

As for Warren, if he can’t go it will be Terdell Sands, who was benched earlier this season for Warren.  “We talk all the time about preparing as if you’re the starter and so whoever gets the opportunity, go in there and seize the opportunity and don’t look back,” Kiffin said.

Oh, and running back LaMont Jordan also was not able to wrap up practice on Thursday for a 2nd straight day, meaning his status was in doubt.  Needless to say it could be a long day Sunday if all these players can’t go in San Diego.
