Walter to Start for Raiders vs 49’ers Saturday Night

Walter gets the start

The Raiders will continue to look for their starter at quarterback on Saturday night, and the first shot will go to part-time starter in 2006, Andrew Walter. Last week in a home win over the Cardinals, Walter was 8-of-11 for 50 yards and threw the Raiders only touchdown. He was also sacked once for a nine-yard loss. “We feel that Andrew played well in the first game and it also gives us a chance to see guys in different settings,” coach Lane Kiffin said. ” (It gives) Andrew a shot to go in with the first unit against the first defense too. It gives Daunte a chance to play in the first half and not sit the whole time. Then it will give us a look at Josh coming off the bench to see how well he does as well.”

Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper will play as well Saturday vs the 49’ers. It is the reverse order of what the team rolled out against the Cardinals last Saturday in Oakland. McCown was impressive in practice on Thursday in 7-on-7 passing drills, and is trying to show coaches why he should earn some sort of job and stick around even after the JaMarcus Russell saga eventually ends and he gets in camp. It seems like the team would likely keep Culpepper around to tutor Russell, and Walter, who started 8 games a season ago, he may have the inside track over McCown. “I’m here to play,” Walter said. “That’s what we’re all fighting for. If that situation occurs we’ll cross that bridge when it does. Until then, I’ll continue to be a pro and do my job. We’re all competing to play. Certainly I am as well.”
