DONE – Culpepper inks 1 yr deal

The Oakland Raiders have signed former Miami & Minnesota QB Duante Culpepper to a 1 year deal Tuesday as a back-up plan for top pick JaMarcus Russell.  The deal could be worth up to 3.2 million if Culpepper makes the roster and reaches playing time incentives.  The 30 year old Culpepper had a private workout before Raider coaches and scouts.  Coach Kifflin announced the signing shortly after the team finished up thier practice.  On the signing, Culpepper said ” The Raiders are giving me the opportunity to compete for the starting job.  When I became a free-agent, I created and ranked eight criteria that I used to evaluate potential teams that were interested in my services, and based on that criteria, Oakland was the best fit.”   Culpepper’s signing comes just 3 months after the Raiders dealt away his former teammate Randy Moss to the Patriots.   In 8 NFL seasons, Duante has passed for over 21,000 yards with 137 TD’s and 89 INTs.  His career QB rating is at 90.8  Coach Kifflin said that the Raiders wanted Culpepper partially due to the situation with Russell.  ” We think he adds definite competition to a position that we basically only had two ( McCown & Walter ) guys here.”  Culppeper will begin his training with the Raiders Weds at their Napa Valley facility.
