Daunte in Town to Work Out For Raiders Today

Culpepper

The Raiders are turning to their next quarterback option as the JaMarcus Russell talks continue to take forever to wrap up. That option appears to be former Vikings and Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper. The 30-year-old will be in Oakland today for a workout under head coach Lane Kiffin and others. Daunte already held a private workout for a member of the Raiders personnel department in Florida Monday, and earned a shot to travel to Oakland for a more official workout with the team.

“Anytime that we have a chance to investigate something that can help our team win, were going to do it,” Kiffin said. “Obviously Daunte is something that weve been looking into for a little bit. This is kind of the climax of it, working him out tomorrow.” The Raiders seem to be getting nowhere fast with number one pick Russell, as right now it appears they are far apart on coming to terms of a deal. “Actually, going kind of slow right now with him at this time,” coach Kiffin stated after Sunday’s practice in Napa. “The last 24, 36 hours, not much progress has been made. We wish he was here. “We’re now getting to the point where we’ve had enough practices where it is going to be a disadvantage to him once he does get here because he is going to be behind.”

Russell is reported to want a deal that could garner him up to $30 million in guaranteed money. Him not being in camp is the longest a top Raiders draft pick has not reported since the team came back from Los Angeles 12 years ago. With Culpepper in the mix as a possible stop gap, this may put the pressure on Russell to get into camp sooner than later if he has visions of being the opening day starter when the Raiders host the Lions on September 9th. The better Daunte looks in the workout, the quicker things will heat up with the Raiders and Russell.
